Avicena

OVERVIEW

Avicena is a computer system used by doctors and nurses at Sanitas Internacional in Colombia. The platform allows the management of personal and medical information.

MY ROLE

I collaborated with my fellow designer in workshops, performed the expert review, conducted the user testing sessions and delivered the final report.

*This diagnosis was carried out in collaboration with ViveLab Bogotá for Sanitas Internacional Colombia.

User Interviews

Before making our review, we considered that it was important to talk to the medical personnel that use the platform every day.

These interviews allowed us to understand the system by experiencing in a real context how users interact so we could find the main usability troubles first-hand.

Expert Review – Heuristic Evaluation

While exploring the platform, we wrote down usability issues on a grid; then these issues were associated with one or more of the heuristics proposed by Jakob Nielsen. At the same time, we suggested possible solutions for the main issues we identified.

At the end of the review, the degree of usability for Avicena was calculated according to the percentage of heuristics which met the requirements.

Software: Google Sheets

User Testing

Avicena platform was tested with real users inside a Gessell chamber.

A medical consultation was simulated. In this context users (doctors and nurses) had to interact with the system to make specific tasks they’re required to do.

This user testing session allowed us to verify and complement the most common difficulties during the interaction with Avicena.

Customers were involved in the user testing session as active observers. They had to take notes of everything they saw (usability issues) through the glass from another side of the chamber.

In the end, the observations were pooled with the client and the most critical ones were prioritized according to business requirements.

Number of tasks to test: 7
Approximate time per session: 40 minutes.

Final Report

All usability issues found were consolidated in one document. Also, a series of technical recommendations were suggested to improve or correct each of these findings.

Our recommendations were usually accompanied by images and references from other platforms for better illustration.

This report was the final deliverable of the diagnosis and was designed to become a guide for the customer to make decisions before implementing improvements in the actual site.
